For this tour we have taken part of our successful Russian itinerary and last years east European tour, there is a slight overlap but nothing that will bore you by passing the same border crossings or travelling the same roads. Once on French soil the group heads for Koblenz where our hotel rests on the banks of the mighty River Rhine, here we enjoy our first evening together.
The suggested route will take us west and into what was the old East Germany to Dresden. The route that day is on mainly good autobahns and arrival at the hotel should give you time to visit the town where you can visit the newly constructed Frauenkirche – Church of Our Lady that was left for over sixty years as a memorial to the bombing in WW2, it has since been patiently restored, ironically by a British charity who raised the funds.
The journey gets more interesting as we move into Poland. The road takes on a rougher feel giving the bikes suspension a little more work to do. Our base here is Torun on the banks of the wide River Vistula and birth place of Nicolaus Copernicus the astronomer - an older version of Patrick Moore - who discovered that the earth was a planet revolving round the sun and not as first thought the centre of the Universe. After a well-earned rest day enjoying the atmosphere of narrow cobbled streets and open-air cafes we take the Baltic Highway to Vilnius the capital of Lithuania.
In 1940 a succession of occupations left sobering memories of dictatorships; first it was the Soviets then the Germans and the Soviets again - who finally left in 1994 - legacies of these times remain today. During the three days we can do the tourist thing with an optional tourist excursion to Grutas Park a lasting testimonial to the Russian occupation. Here a collection of Stalinist sculptures is assembled in wooded surroundings, which echo with the sounds of the past labour camps.
Arriving in the Czech Republic we stop one night in Warsaw, enough time to witness why the city holds ‘pole’ position in the race to become European having gone from communist frying pan into the democratic fire. Next is Prague. Last year we missed out this jewel that is rated as one of the finest cities to come out of the cold. Our hotel here is situated close to Hradcanny Castle that dominates the city. You can walk down the steep steps and along narrow lanes that tumble unchanged past the huge church of St. Nicolas to the River Vltava.
Finally after the past few days in new Europe we return to Strasbourg to enjoy our final evening together and reflect on the experiences of the tour.
