This year we are departing from our usual Swiss tour of high mountains to explore the lakes of Ticino, the Italian speaking part of the country.
For this tour we have secured a brilliant package in an extraordinary gem of a hotel set amongst the Swiss and Italian lakes of Maggiore, Como and Lugano. The main hotel for this tour was opened in 2005 and is truly a jewel with a unique charm on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland. However Italy and the other lakes are within an easy ride or if you really want to be a tourist the transport system needs to be tried to be believed. If you are like me you will never know whether you are in Switzerland or Italy because the location of the hotel is so close to the border.
To maximise the time in Switzerland our route will take us from Calais to Dijon in one hit and from there the second leg takes us into Ticino. In the four days by Lake Maggiore, with our help, you will be free to construct your own daily itineraries. Valley Maggia winds its way through a maze of huge granite forests. Here modern architecture is blended with traditional buildings. At Mogno the newly built church built by Mario Botta out of granite and marble is worth the gracious ride but be warned don’t be too ambitious. The location and hotel offer great facilities and I doubt if you will wander far from base camp.
The nature of the hotel means that each room differs from the next but offers the same high quality facilities including luxury swimming pools inside and out. However to avoid disappointment each room reserved for us has a lake view balcony.
