This is a tour that will show you many of the high spots of inner Spain and those of Portugal. On docking at Santander our route takes us through the rugged countryside of Cantabria and onto the great plateau of the meseta ringed by the mountains and various sierras. There are great expanses of wide-open flat land of wheat fields but it has magnificent cities to be enjoyed. Surprisingly foreign tourists rarely visit some of the most beautiful corners of Castila y Leon. We spend one night in a 12th century castle style palace Parador amongst the regal surroundings and thick stonewalls.
After a leisurely Parador breakfast (the best in Spain) the show moves to Portugal. Depending on your interest you have the choice of routes. You can route your journey north to Galicia and visit Santiago de Compostela the destination of pilgrims who walk for hundreds of miles to the shrine of St.James the Apostle to arrive at the steps of the great cathedral. Alternatively follow the River Mino to Orense and then into the Minho region of Portugal. Here our base is the five star Pousada at Viana do Castelo. This commands a spectacular hill top location overlooking the River Lima. While we are here there is the opportunity to take an excursion to Oporto for a tasting at a famous Port wine lodge, lunch in the old fishing port and a river trip.
We travel back to the Picos de Europa for three nights to soak up the atmosphere of the wonderful mountainous arena that boasts some of the most natural scenery in the whole of Europe. Here the hotel is in sight of white sandy beaches on one side and the Picos on the other. The highest mountain is 2648m high – not much as mountains go but for sheer beauty and grandeur towering above tiny rural villages in green fertile valleys they are hard to beat.
Finally we travel back to Santander for our return crossing to Plymouth. |
