For this tour we have taken into consideration the costs of travelling down from Calais and decided that the longer ferry crossing may have appeal.
From Santander we ride an exciting route south sparing a few minutes in the vibrant city of Burgos. We continue on our suggested route to what many thought to be the jewel of the Province of Castila y Leon. Our hotel Verry II in El Burgo de Osma is one of my all time favourites and where possible I always try to fit in one night here. The restaurant is something special, who would forget the hors d’oeuvre of pigs ears? And the fish main course is even more exotic.
Heading west we cross the arid meseta prairies that can be blisteringly hot in summer and freezing cold in winter but don’t worry May should be very pleasant time for our visit.
Using a combination of good main roads and autopistas we ride to our hotel that is set amongst the Andalucian olive groves and was once an olive factory. This will be our base for four nights. From here we suggest daily itineraries for you to explore; the Alhambra Palace at Granada is a mere thirty miles away and Malaga is just forty miles and within walking distance of the hotel is an organic fish farm specialising in sturgeon and where you can taste caviar direct from the fish.
The tour moves further south where our hotel here is in sight of the Rock of Gibraltar and for a short ride or a small taxi fare the ‘Rock’ is truly full of interest. We stop for coffee at the Moorish Parador at Ronda located on a spectacular steep gorge before riding across the Natural Park to Arcos de la Frontera. On route we ride the Route of the White Villages passing the glistening white sugar cube houses and farms where the huge black fighting bulls are bred. From our base, if weather conditions permit, its possible to take the whale watching boat across the Straights of Gibraltar or even use the fast ferry service across to Ceuta a small Spanish enclave in Africa but if that’s not enough there is always the numerous Sherry bodegas to keep us entertained.
For our return route we travel the famous Ruta de la Plata - the Silver Route from Sevilla to Cantabria where we spend our last night before reaching Santander and our return ferry.
