After several years away we have decided to return to Slovenia to see how it has benefited from six years as a member of the European Community. About the size of Wales it is one of the most fascinating countries in Eastern Europe and offers charming countryside, lakes and the mountains of The Julian Alps allow plenty of good riding opportunities.
Our tour starts in familiar surroundings on the SeaFrance ferry and from Calais. After over nighting in France our route the next day gives us time to enjoy some great flowing open roads through the Black Forest – road 500 has to be ridden to be believed possessing every type of bend in the book.
We enter Austria at Bregenz after winding our way over the Arlberg pass at 5400ft we reach our hill top hotel where we enjoy the Austrian Tyrol at its best.
Following our two nights here the route takes us into Slovenia via the Italian town of Tarvisio before settling into our hotel in Kranjska Gora. Here free of luggage we will be able to explore Slovenian countryside. Bled with its wonderful lake and medieval castle is only 30 miles away and the capital Ljubljana 50 miles and the world famous Postojna caves are a mere 90 miles on quiet uncluttered roads. If all this sounds a bit touristy try the Triglav National Park road over Mount Triglav, fifty number hairpins all cobbled will keep your mind occupied!
In the past we have found that eating out in Kranjska Gora is a pleasure and well worth while experiencing. There is a good selection of cafes and bars of good quality and reasonable prices.
Our return route touches Switzerland before entering Germany for another chance to ride the road 500. After the long ride we enjoy a restful two nights before the final night in France where we say goodbyes and reflect on the twist and turns of the past few days.
