After last year's hugely successful 'Explore Extremadura' tour we thought that that there were many more discerning riders out there who would appreciate the riding, the hotels and the food. The region really has the qualities that we all look for in a holiday destination.
We start the tour on Brittany ferries crossing from Portsmouth to Santander and on disembarking make our way along the Costa Verde to a wonderful beach side hotel in a cove overlooking the white sandy beach. Sadly time only allows for one night however we do return there before the ferry back to UK.
From there on we are in Extremadura we spend two nights in each of the three hotels. Our first stop is in a converted hospital that was built to celebrate the visit of King Alfonso in 1922. This conversion tastefully blends old and new architecture. Sitting on a peak we can enjoy the calm wooded surroundings and wonderful views.
The ride outs from here are something special as well but you must not leave without sampling the honey which has made this village famous and well known to beekeepers.
Following the calm and sweetness, our next resting place is in a town at an early 20th century mansion where elegance sits perfectly in the modern day installations. Once an old iron mining town - some mines of which can still be visited – the hotel smacks of wrought iron and stained glass. There is time during the free days to take a wonder around the busy town and enjoy the many bars surrounding the atmospheric Plaza mayor.
After a lazy breakfast we ride along the empty country roads to our next ancient and modern hotel that is built on the site. The Conventual de Alcantara is no Holiday Inn. This started life as a Franciscan monastery and was later converted to a floor mill, then came the hotel. With great imagination the hotel complex incorporates the massive machinery of the floor mill which gives it that classical ancient and modern feel.
The jewel in the crown of Extremadura and well worth a visit is Caceres here you have a mediaeval walled city which has no equal in all of Spain.
We return to Santander from where we started at the beach side hotel with its own cove and white sandy shore.
