Aragon and the Pyrenees
The Spanish and French Pyrenees.
The stunning beauty of Aragon with an opportunity to ride the big French Cols!
The Tour starts at Portsmouth where we will meet for introductions before boarding our late afternoon departure on board Brittany Ferries Pont - Aven to Santander. Our early evening arrival on Day One in Spain leaves us sufficient time for our short journey to reach Suances before dark and our comfortable four star (half board) transit hotel.
A relaxed start on Day Two is a progressive ride heading towards Aragon, we will be sure to take some fabulous routes through the Aragonese Pyrenees as we ride into the heart of this amazing Spanish region. The roads are flowing, twisty and mountainous in places with some incredible scenery along the way.
Our quality (half board) tour hotel for four nights is a former nineteenth century customs office and barracks of the Carabineros Corps, responsible for guarding the border crossing over the Col de Somport. Once again we will be treated to some wonderful cuisine, focussing on locally prepared produce, whist enjoying views of the River Aragon and the Canfranc Valley from the hotels panoramic terrace.
Three full ride out days give ample opportunity to enjoy the amazing roads and mountain passes straddling both sides of the border, including the Col de la Pierre St Martin and the Col du Portalet; perfect circular routes in opposing directions from our ideally situated location!
Venture over the border into France and you are a short ride from the start of the iconic D918 and ‘la route des cols’ which will lead you over the incredible Col d’Aubisque to experience some amazing, twisty turns and switchbacks with stunning scenery, leading to the summit of the Col de Soulor for a well-earned coffee!
The roads in this region of Aragon need to be experienced; flowing open aspect bends mix with tight turns and mountainous switchbacks on smooth tarmac, very technical in places and virtually deserted! Take the A-176 to Heco and Anso leading to Garde on the NA-176 and ultimately the NA-137, track north along this incredible, sweeping road up and over the iconic Col de la Pierre Saint Martin!
Our return journey to Portsmouth on Day Six leaves Spain in the mid - afternoon, so after relaxed a breakfast we take a direct ride back to Santander in good time to re-board Brittany Ferries Pont-Aven for our overnight crossing back home to Portsmouth. Plenty of time then to catch up with some banter; reflecting on our shared experiences on the riding highlights of our Tour to Aragon and the Pyrenees!
